Eek!! Stop the presses! Are we talking about this? YEP!
This is a very common experience (called Stress Urinary Incontinence) with mommas, but they are not the only ones who experience this occurrence. AND, just because it is common, does not mean it is something we should just live with.
Urinary incontinence affects 4 out of 10 women, 1 out of 10 men and 17% of children under the age of 15. Stress Urinary Incontinence affects 28% of male and female tables between 18-21yo.
Urinary Incontinence is most likely due to pelvic floor dysfunction – meaning it could be, tight or weak musculature, inability to control the pressure internally or incoordination of breathing and muscle control.
The pelvic floor is made up of 3 layers: Layer 1 – Urinary and sexual function Layer 2 – Assists in urinary and bowel function Layer 3 – Assists with lumbo-pelvic stability and supports the pelvic organs
These 3 groups 👆🏻 need to work together to create optimal control for closure of the urethra (to control the urine flow).
But besides these 3 layers, we also have to make sure we have good hip mobility and control, address the abdominal muscles and even all the way up to the shoulders.
If you are having Urinary incontinence, pelvic floor pain or even hip stiffness, please get an appointment with a PT for an assessment so they can help you or refer you on to a specialist who can help you feel confident again with daily activities!
